Coaching and Speaking Are Two Different Skill Sets

A few weeks ago, I was having a conversation with someone who was interested in our RAYMA Foundations™ Coach School. We talked about how coaching and speaking are two completely different skill sets.

I have to be honest here. One of my biggest pet peeve’s in this industry is when you have somebody who is a really great motivational speaker, and because of that, they think that they are also a great coach. However, when you hear from their clients, you find out that they have not developed their coaching skills to be able to actually COACH people. Instead, they spend their time in coaching sessions constantly motivationally speaking to their clients.

That's not coaching.

That is speaking.

They are two different skill sets.

How do you know the difference between these skills?

Great question! Here's a few tips on WHY they are different:

Coaching is:

  • Listening more than talking. You’re listening for things like: patterns, limiting beliefs, how they see the world they live in.
  • Asking challenging questions to help your client find a solution that they will follow through on.
  • Providing accountability and a sounding board to process people issues.
  • Coaching is a partnership with your client to help them reach their goals, not yours.

Speaking is:

  • Inspiring, teaching, challenging, and even motivating a group of people at once.
  • All about YOUR MESSAGE. That's what is important here!
  • A one-sided conversation where your energy makes or breaks the talk.
  • Speaking is about sharing information and hoping the audience walks away with something they can use or remember.

Because this is such a common challenge within the coaching and the speaking industry, we developed our coach school to teach you both

First, we teach you how to become a better coach. We teach you to understand the basics of coaching by learning how to coach yourself first.

We give you all of the curriculum plus coaching models.

We give you a chance to practice coaching with other people.

And we help you develop the skill of recognizing patterns.

That's what a coach does.

We help you recognize patterns in yourself first so that you can help your clients, or your team members, get out of their own limiting patterns.

And after you’ve spent time learning how to be a coach... that’s when we give you in-depth speaking skills to help you become a better speaker, and to be able to go from coaching skills to speaking skills as needed.

Listen, becoming a coach is something that you develop over time. There’s no quick fix here. That is why we have developed our coach school the way that we have, because we want you to not only grow your coaching skills with us over a few months, but we actually give you space to grow your coaching skills and your speaking skills over the course of a year where you can grow through the seasons where life happens.

That's what it really takes to become a coach. And the best part about coach school is that you get the support from us while you activate the skills you're learning, while you build your business, while you lead your team, etc. Whatever reason you're in coach school, we give you space to do that.

I invite you to join us, IF you’re ready to take your skills to a deeper level. Enrollment for the next cohort of coach School is open now. The first five to enroll get $1,200 OFF. Register now at https://www.raymateam.com/coachcertification
