Dear Female Leader: The number one intangible leadership gap that female leaders face is confidence and imposter syndrome.
If you struggle with this, stick around because I have a few tips for you to help you overcome it. Now, many female leaders struggle with self-doubt and imposter syndrome, and that leads to a lack of confidence in their decision making abilities and in their leadership styles.
This means they tend to question their accomplishments, and that makes them come across as lacking even more confidence. So overcoming these feelings is an essential part to assert your authority and inspire confidence in the people that you are leading and the people that you work with.
Here's three tips to help you grow your confidence and stop being sabotaged by imposter syndrome.
The first tip to overcome imposter syndrome and grow your confidence is to acknowledge your achievements. So what do I mean by that? Well, basically you need to remind yourself every single day of what you've achieved. You need to keep a success journal or a gratitude journal and write down what you've accomplished. Write down the kind things people have said about you, the things that, uh, make them feel like you help them keep track of this every day because your eyes need to see it, and so does your mind.
The second tip is to share your vulnerabilities. Now I know, I know that can be scary, but here's the thing. Being vulnerable and being open fosters connection and it fosters community support, and you end up feeling less isolated and alone when you do this.
The final tip is to practice speaking up and getting feedback. This means you might have to practice receiving feedback as well, so make sure that you're getting this feedback and you're speaking up with trusted colleagues or with trusted mentors or coaches so that you can gain perspective on your strengths.
